Conférencier: Jason Beres, Infragistics, New Jersey USA
Sujet : Building Next Generation Web applications using Silverlight
Note: Cette conférence sera en anglais

Silverlight is arguably the biggest shift in Microsoft strategy on the web since IE was introduced over 10 years ago.  With the reach of cross platform and the richness of the .NET framework, the future of building Rich Internet Applications (RIA’s) has never been more exciting.  In this talk, you will learn about Silverlight, the platforms, tools and technologies you can use to build Silverlight applications, and how it differs from the full Windows Presentation Foundation platform in .NET 3.0 and how Silverlight can be used in conjunction with other technologies, such as ASP.NET Ajax, Web Services and Visual Studio 2008.

Jason Beres is the Director of Product Management for Infragistics, the world’s leading publisher of presentation layer tools.  Jason is one of the founders of Florida .NET User Groups, he is the founder of the New Jersey .NET User Group, he is a Visual Basic .NET MVP, and he is on the INETA Speakers Bureau.  Jason is the author of several books on .NET development, he is a national and international speaker conference speaker, he is a frequent columnist for several .NET publications, and keeps very active in the .NET community.

If you want to install the Brother HL-2040n printer in Vista as a network attached printer, you'll notice that the printer driver installer does not offer you this option.  You must configure this manually.  Here's how:

Download the driver from Brother's Website.

When installing, select local printer connected on the parallel port.

In Control Panel/Printers, right click on the printer name and select Properties.  Click on the port tab.

Click on the Add Port... button and add a standard TCP/IP port.

Enter the IP address according to your configuration and the other settings as following:

If you have trouble finding the IP address of your printer, download and install the Brother Administrator Utility (BRAdmin)

When upgrading or moving to a new PC, you might want to move your RSS feeds that you created in Internet Explorer 7.  The process is simple, just copy the files from the old PC to the new one.  The files are located here:

C:\Users\[THE USER NAME]\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Feeds

Conférencier: Les Pinter, MVP VB, Boston USA
Sujet: User Controls in VB
Note: Cette présentation sera en anglais

User Controls are one of the best ways to take advantage of inheritance in .NET. Microsoft has included a User Control project type, and offers ways to create user controls throughout the Integrated Development Environment. Surprisingly, the best way to implement most WinForms user controls does not involve User Controls as Microsoft presents them. In this presentation, you'll discover how to create User Controls, how to subclass WinForms controls, and why the two are different.

Les Pinter is a noted author, Microsoft MVP, and popular INETA speaker who regularly presents at conferences in the US, Canada, Latin America, Europe, and Russia. Les founded Pinter Consulting in 1982 after selling the precursor of Microsoft Word to a 23-year-old Bill Gates. Pinter Consulting has developed enterprise applications for Halliburton, Shell Oil, Exxon, Mitchell Energy, Lockheed, Catholic Charities, TRW, and many other companies throughout the United States and abroad. His company offers development services in C# and VB.NET, ASP.NET and Visual FoxPro. Les has written 7 books and over 260 journal articles on programming. He is a Contributing Editor for Universal Thread Magazine (Montreal) and a former Contributing Editor for Point DBF (Paris), and published a database newsletter in the US and Russia for 10 years. Les has offices in San Francisco and Boston, and employs teams of programmers in Argentina, Brazil and Russia.

Found this on the 2K forums via Gamespot:

quote.png

Problem:

After playing the game for a long time (on the Xbox 360 only), the game begins to "hitch" or "pause" slightly every 10-15 seconds. The problem does not go away if you restore a savegame, start a new game, or reboot the Xbox 360.

Solution/Workaround:

This seems to be a problem with the hard drive caching system on in the Xbox 360 system software, and we are working with Microsoft to identify a solution for this issue. We have confirmed that the hitching goes away if you clear the hard drive cache.

To clear the hard drive cache, you must hold down both the RB and LB gamepad buttons while the game is starting. This must be done IMMEDIATELY after the console is rebooted (or the game is launched from the dashboard) and the buttons must only be released AFTER the red 2K Games logo appears.

NOTE: do not attempt to clear the hard drive cache by holding the "A" button during loading. While that works for Oblivion, Bioshock uses different button combination to clear the cache, and holding "A" will not work.

OMG!  This is important, significant, major, big, huge!  It means that we will be able to develop .NET apps that are truly cross-platform (Windows, Mac & Linux).

Over the last few months we've been working to enable Silverlight support on Linux, and today we are announcing a formal partnership with Novell to provide a great Silverlight implementation for Linux.  Microsoft will be delivering Silverlight Media Codecs for Linux, and Novell will be building a 100% compatible Silverlight runtime implementation called "Moonlight".

Moonlight will run on all Linux distributions, and support FireFox, Konqueror, and Opera browsers.  Moonlight will support both the JavaScript programming model available in Silverlight 1.0, as well as the full .NET programming model we will enable in Silverlight 1.1.

This is an historical collaboration between an open source project and Microsoft. They have collaborated with other folks on the server space (Xen, PHP and) but this is their first direct contribution to the open source desktop.

Microsoft benefits by making Silverlight reach the Linux and BSD spaces. We benefit by ensuring that users of open source operating systems get access to sites that adopt Silverlight to deliver content or spice up their web apps.
